Information for Prospective Parents
How long is the school day?
The school day is from 8:15 am to 3:25 pm. Kindergarten is a full day or half day morning program. Half day kindergarten is from 8:15 am to 12:15 pm.
Do students purchase their lunch or bring it from home?
All students bring snack and lunch from home daily. We encourage healthy food items and teach about importance of good nutrition.
Are art and music classes offered?
All students will have art and music classes. Instrumental music is available to Intermediate and Middle School students that are developmentally ready. Students also have enrichment courses such as drama, walking or hiking, crafting, basketball, or cooking.
Are teachers fully certified?
Michigan teacher certification is required of all classroom teachers. Ann Arbor Learning Community teachers have teaching experience ranging from one to twenty years.
How are students graded?
All students receive regular progress reports (report cards) from their teachers. AALC’s school year has four marking periods. Progress reports are distributed after each marking period ends. Students in grades 3-8 take the NWEA MAP test. Students in grades 3-8 take the Michigan standardized assessment as well.
How often do students take field trips?
Typically students have four to six field trips during the school year or approximately one to two field trip each marking period. Teachers plan and schedule field trips that align with content expectations and standards. Common destinations are orchards (Early Primary and Primary); nature areas (Intermediate and Middle School); museums (all levels); and arts performances at local centers (all levels).
Do students use computers and technology in the classrooms?
Individual desktop or laptop computers are available in the Early Primary and Primary classrooms. Students may use these computers during center activities or choice time. AALC has two mobile carts with student chromebooks and one cart with student tablet computers.. Students use this technology during Middle School core subject classes; Intermediate technology use instruction; and Primary online mathematics activities. Students in the Intermediate and Middle School levels have individual Google Drive accounts where they can create and store documents. AALC began using Google Apps for Edu in the office in 2012 and with students & teaching staff in 2013.
