Instructional Staff
Debbie Bergin Early Primary Teacher - Debbie graduated from Eastern Michigan University in April 2002 with a degree in Elementary Education. Mrs. Bergin is certified to teach all subjects K-5 and has endorsements in math and early childhood education. She will pursue a master’s degree in reading this coming spring. When Mrs. Bergin is not in school or at the soccer fields with her children, the family likes taking trips up north to Higgins Lake. Some of the things Debbie enjoys are reading, walking, swimming, and bicycling. This is Mrs. Bergin's ninth year with AALC.
Tammy King Early Primary Teacher - Tammy holds a Bachelor of Arts in Developmental Psychology from the University of Michigan and a Masters of Elementary Education from the University of Michigan School of Education. She is certified to teach K-5. Tammy lives in Ypsilanti Township with her husband, 4 cats, 1 red-eared slider (turtle), and several fish. Mrs. King also works with a Volunteer Reading Tutoring program with The Family Learning Institute in Ann Arbor. When not teaching she enjoys gardening, reading, writing, playing soccer on a recreational league, photography, scrap booking, and arts and crafts. This is Mrs. King's fifth year with AALC.
Susan Thomas Early Primary Teacher - Sue Thomas joined the faculty at AALC in 2008 when she was new to Ann Arbor and Michigan. Mrs. Thomas spent the previous year teaching Kindergarten in a Title 1 school in Richmond, V.A. before that she spent 11 years in Chicago at The University of Chicago Laboratory Schools where she taught a multiage nursery and kindergarten program as assistant teacher for 7 years while obtaining her Masters degree in Instructional Leadership from The University of Illinois at Chicago. Before her move to the US, Mrs. Thomas was an Elementary school teacher in London for 9 years. She was also a nursery teacher at the Bertschi School in Seattle for 3 years and a nursery & kindergarten teacher at the International School in Copenhagen. Mrs. Thomas grew up in London and attended College in Manchester where she received a Bachelors of Education degree and specialized in creative embroidery and textile arts. Sue’s family lives in England, France and Tunisia. She currently lives near AALC with husband Khaled, 2 teenagers, Sarah and Yusef and NuNu the cat.
Lauren LeDuc Early Prmary Teacher - Lauren earned her BA in Elementary Education and hold minors in math, language arts, and early childhood education. She graduated from Western Michigan University this past December. In her spare time Lauren loves to read, play sports (especially field hockey and soccer) as well as spend time with her family and friends. This is Lauren's second year at AALC and she is so excited to be part of this wonderful and supportive community.
Stephanie Schuetzler Early Primary Teacher - Stephanie graduated from Michigan State with a degree in Elementary Education. She is currently working on her Masters degree in Early Childhood Education. Miss Schuetzler has taught for over six years, enjoying working with children. In her spare time Miss S loves to do crafts, read, and spend time with family and friends. This is Miss Schuetzler's sixth year with AALC.
Wendy Nagle Primary Teacher - Wendy received her Bachelor of Arts, with a major in English Literature and a concentration in Studio Arts, from Skidmore College in 1990. She then went on to the University of Pennsylvania, where she earned a Masters of Science in Elementary Education in 1991. Wendy taught at public and independent schools in Philadelphia, Seattle and Chicago before making Ann Arbor her home in 1997. This is Mrs. Nagle's tenth year at the Ann Arbor Learning Community.
Mary Magos Primary Teacher (Lead Teacher) - Mary graduated from Eastern Michigan University in 2002 with a degree in Elementary Education and an Early Childhood Endorsement. Mrs. Magos taught preschool for three years at the University of Michigan Child Care Center. During the summer, Mary helps to run a Theater Arts Camp for children who are trying out their talents on stage. She enjoys playing with her daughter and watching Ohio State Football. This is Mrs. Magos' sixth year with AALC.
Dianne Stemen Primary Teacher - This is Dianne’s second year teaching at AALC. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education with a Reading Specialist minor from Montana State University – Havre. She has over 13 years experience working with children of all age groups with eight of those years as a substitute teacher at various schools in Montana and Michigan. Now that both her sons are in college, Dianne spends her spare time fishing with her husband, playing Bunco with friends, and planning for her boys’ next visits home.
Jeff Wason Primary Teacher - Jeff is a second-career teacher who has a Masters Degree in Elementary Education from the University of Michigan with endorsements for Language Arts, Fine Arts, and English as a Second Language. In his previous professional life he was a photojournalist in Ohio, a Peace Corps Volunteer in Liberia, a graphic artist in the San Francisco Bay Area, and has traveled extensively in the United States, Asia, Africa and the Caribbean. He enjoys making connections between student interest, the curriculum and his life experience to enhance student learning. Mr. Wason (pronounced “Way-sun”) enjoys singing, playing guitar and piano, swimming, and various sporting activities with his wife and two young sons. This is his second year teaching at AALC.
Cynthia Andrews Intermediate Teacher (Lead Teacher) - Cynthia graduated from Eastern Michigan University in 2004. She has teaching experience in Ann Arbor, Detroit, Oak Park, Whitmore Lake and Ypsilanti. Mrs. Andrews has also been a substitute teacher for AALC since 2001. Cynthia has four children, 2 children currently attend AALC and 2 children are in High School; one of them is a 2005 graduate of AALC. Mrs. Andrews has given much of her time to children. She has been involved in homeschooling, the Lenawee County 4-H, Cub and Boy Scouts, coaching HS volleyball, cheerleading and track. Her other interests are cooking, history, sewing, gardening and reading. This is Mrs. Andrews' sixth year with AALC.
Kris Kreiner Intermediate Teacher - Kris has a Bachelors degree in Earth Sciences with minors in elementary education, choral music and social studies. Her Masters degree is in K - 12 curriculum and gifted education. Mrs. Kreiner has taught most grade levels from kindergarten through college over the past twenty some years. She enjoys spending time with her family, reading, building and music. This is Mrs. Kreiner's twelfth year with AALC.
Tracey Marchyok Intermediate Teacher - Tracey has been involved with education, children and independent schools since graduating from EMU in 1989. She has a bachelor's in elementary education with a concentration on English/Language Arts and Environmental education. Tracey is pleased to be working at a school that appreciates both the social and academic rewards that happens in a school setting. When not at school, she can be found behind a book, on a trail, in a garden, spending time with her husband and sons, visiting family/friends or baking/cooking. This is Tracey's fourth year with AALC.
Stacy Downer Middle School Teacher - Stacy is excited to be a part of the AALC middle school team! She teaches language arts and science, as well as electives. She lives in the beautiful city of Ann Arbor! When she is not teaching, Stacy enjoys spending time with family and friends. Stacy has a husband, Ryan, a dog, Mischa and a cat, Nala. Stacy is an avid reader and greatly enjoys the outdoors. You can find her camping, swimming, or golfing in the summer months. Of course, Stacy loves to teach! She graduated in 2006 from Eastern Michigan University with a degree in Elementary Education. She holds endorsements in Language Arts and Science at the middle school levels. Stacy has a variety of teaching experiences, ranging from the pre-school to middle school levels, and with multi-grade classrooms. She is in a Master’s Program focused on Reading and K-12 Literacy and plans to gain an endorsement as a Reading Specialist. This is Stacy's third year with Ann Arbor Learning Community.
Abby Kuhn Middle School Teacher - Abby graduated from Marietta College in southeastern Ohio with a degree in Middle Childhood Education. Miss Kuhn has worked in various school settings since this time and also directs the children’s program for a family camp in the UP. She enjoys music, reading, sailing, traveling and photography. This is Miss Kuhn's fifth year teaching at AALC.
Drake Meadow Middle School Teacher - Drake’s previous experience includes being a full-time teacher in a private school, and as a long-term sub in public schools. Outside of school, Drake is a caller and musician for the local traditional dance community. Drake is also a Master Gardener, and a volunteer park steward for Ann Arbor's Evergreen Park. This is Drake’s third year at AALC.
Marissa Kowalczuk Art Teacher - Ms. Marissa Kowalczuk, our Art Director, teaches art to the students at the Ann Arbor Learning Community. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Neuroscience and Studio Art with a minor in Art History from Oberlin College. She also holds a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education from the University of Michigan. She is certified to teach General Education K-8 self-contained class, K-8 science, and K-8 art education. She would like to be called Ms. K. This is Ms. K's seventh year with AALC.
Gretchen Plamondon Physical Education / Health Teacher - Gretchen graduated from Eastern Michigan University in April of 2006 with her teaching certification in Physical Education and Health Education. Gretchen currently lives in Ann Arbor and is the head diving coach at Saline High School. She likes to spend as much of her free time outdoors, and enjoys activities such as kayaking and hiking as well as playing a variety of different sports such as recreational softball, volleyball, and badminton. Her Saturdays in the fall are devoted to Michigan football. Go Blue! This is her third year at AALC.
Bryce Ropp Music Teacher- Bryce graduated from Oakland University in April of 2010 with his teaching certification in K-12 music. He has a history major as well. This is his first year at AALC. Bryce is a native of Shelby Twp and currently lives there. He plays violin in the Macomb Symphony and regularly performs with chamber music groups. When he is not at school Bryce likes to go Up-North to his family’s cottage in Lincoln. Bryce likes to kayak, windsurf, fish, garden, cross-country ski, hike, and backpack. Mr. Ropp is also an avid cyclist and rode across the country on the Trans America trail last summer.
Elizabeth Keller School Social Worker - Elizabeth grew up in Ann Arbor and graduated from the University of Michigan with a general studies degree in psychology, sociology and women’s studies. She then attended U of M’s School of Social Work, earning her MSW with a specialization in school social work in 2008. Outside of school, Elizabeth loves to spend time with her husband and family, watch movies, run and bike. She has been with AALC since the fall of 2008.
Administration
Ticheal Jones Dean - Joining the AALC team in 2008 she brings a wealth of experience ranging from teacher, dean of students and assistant principal. She has a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education, a Masters degree in Administration and Supervision and she is currently a doctoral candidate at the University of Phoenix for a Doctorate of Education degree with an emphasis in Educational Leadership. Ticheal brings to AALC a love and passion for ensuring that all students have a quality education. Her extensive time in public charter school academies allows her to understand the key ingredients that make up successful schools.
Wendi Felgner Business Manager - Wendi joined the school staff in 1999. She became the school's business manager in 2000. Wendi has a Bachelors degree in Organizational Studies and a Masters degree in Public Health (health education). Her past experience was in education and health care.
