ART

Happy December! Great news! The Art Show is coming! Keep your eyes open for the amazing work we have accomplished so far this semester. If you are interested in lending a hand in making nametags or installation please e-mail me (marissakowa@yahoo.com) or drop by the art room. While we will be showcasing some of our masterpieces, we are still busy making more. The early primary students are finishing up their series of prints and will select out their four best prints to make an Andy Warhol inspired work of art. They will be starting to focus on the career of Vincent Van Gogh and learning about how to put together a composition through painting. The primary students have finished up their two-part study on Frank Stella and have explored how transformative the lives of artists are. Their engaging organic studies will be displayed in the great room. Their next investigation will be on classical landscapes. They will be looking at The Impressionists and their work “en plein air”. They will be including watercolor technique practices in their explorations. The intermediate students have gone down under. They are looking at various different Aboriginal art forms and are creating their own Dreamings based on indigenous animals of Australia. Dreamings are stories of creation and are depicted through symbols. The middle school has completed their unit on Op Art with a focus on Bridget Riley. Their mesmerizing pieces will also be gracing the walls soon. Their next focus will be on zillij or zellige. Zillij is terra cotta tile work covered with enamel in the form of chips set into plaster. It is one of the main characteristics of the Moroccan architecture. It consists of geometrical mosaics made from ceramic. Patrons of the art used zilllij historically to decorate their homes as a statement of luxury and the sophistication of the inhabitants. Zillij is typically a series of patterns utilizing colorful geometric shapes. This framework of expression arose from the need of Islamic artists to create spatial decorations that avoided depictions of living things, consistent with the teachings of Islamic law. Lastly, The Eco-Exploration class has completed their study on Louise Nevelson’s assemblage pieces. They are working on independent reflections of Detroit in response to the pieces they created at the beginning of the semester.

DRAMA

The auditions are over! The play has been selected! Let the rehearsals begin! After reviewing four different scripts, the drama class chose out the play, And To Think It Happened On Thursday. They completed auditions prior to our Thanksgiving break and have now been cast. We will be rehearsing, set building and preparing for our performance in January.

Keep Dramatic!
