Welcome to Mrs. Andrews' class page!
October is here! That means lots of things will be happening here at AALC.
MEAP testing will commence during the week of October 8, 2007. Students are well versed in proper nutrition to help them achieve their best.
Field Trips Our first field trip will be to the Leslie Science Center on October 11, 2007. We will be learning about how early Native Americans lived. This coincides with what we are learning in Socials Studies about "Beringia" and early arrival theories to North America. We will be exploring different Native American cultures throughout October. We have also been discussing maps and different kinds of maps (azimuthal and conformal) as well as longitude and latitude. I would like to give many thanks to Mrs. Amanda Lucero for helping us in the classroom to make our paper plate globes.
On October 31, 2007, we will be venturing out to watch the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. I hope that parents will plan on joining us for this special event. The theme of the program is "Storytelling through Music." This will be a fitting day to tell stories.
Science Students are finishing up their study on Nutrition in science and will be studying the different human body systems.
Stop the Presses! Did you know that our classroom is attempting to write a classroom newspaper? It's true! Look for the first edition to come out at the end of this month. Many thanks to Janet Adelmann for helping to put this paper together.
Literature Students will be exploring "Mysteries" during our reading time. Students have been given one of four books that they will be working with in groups: The Westing Game (Ellen Raskin), The Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler (E.L. Konigsburg), The Boxcar Children #1 (Warner), and Jigsaw Jones. Students selected one of four projects to complete while reading the book: Detective Agency, Change the Ending, Character Cards, and a Setting Map. Check with your scholar about their selected project and rubric.
Scholastic book order forms went home on October 8, 2007. Attached to the order forms was a note letting you know about another option for ordering books. You can now order and pay for your books online! This can be a very convenient option for you and your family. Just click here to get to the Scholastic website. However, if you are like me and still are skeptical about placing orders online and would like to write a check or pay cash, you can still send the order in to school and we will ensure that your order gets placed. All book orders must be submitted by October 26, 2007. Some favorite picks would be from popular authors like Gary Paulsen (Hatchet, Brian's Winter, Brian's Hunt, Tracker), Andrew Clements (Lunch Money, Frindle, A Week in the Woods), Louis Sachar (Wayside School Stories, Holes)and Ellen Raskin (The Westing Game). Students have also been asking me for scary tales. I would like to thank Mrs. Tatiana Riley and Mrs. Wilmarth for assisting me with the book orders this month. Your help was tremendous!
