Green School Information

During the 2010-2011 school year AALC became a certified Michigan Green School at the Emerald level, the second highest level. In the 2011-2012 school year we plan to achieve Evergreen status, the highest level of green certification available through Michigan Green Schools.

Who provides the certification? “Michigan Green Schools is a non-profit 501(c)3 agency dedicated to assisting all Michigan schools – public and private – achieve environmental goals which include protecting the air, land, water and animals of our state along with world outreach through good ecological practices and the teaching of educational stewardship of students pre-kindergarten through senior high school”. More information can be found at http://www.michigangreenschools.us/

What did AALC do to be certified as a Michigan Green School?

AALC’s commitment to the environment is part of our charter and a foundation of our school. AALC desires to guide our students to “shape an environmentally and socially responsible future”. AALC achieved our certification because:

• The school purchases green cleaning and office supplies and recycled office paper.
• Every class and the lunch room have recycling available and encouraged
• Students have implemented projects to recycle juice pouches and plastic caps
• Students have raised funds to protect animals
• Students participate in local community environmental issues
• School promotes energy conservation
• School hosts speakers on environmental issues.
• Curriculum includes lessons on local and global environmental issues.

What will AALC do in the 2011-2012 school year to become Evergreen certified?

• Host a solar cookout to promote alternative energy
• Certify our butterfly garden as a wildlife habitat
• Distribute student-made recycled totes to discourage the use of disposables
• Other ideas? We would love to hear them!

What can you do to help?
• Join the Green School Committee
• Share your ideas for events, speakers, field trips, etc.
