|
Summer Garden Work Day The Primary classes are hosting a garden work day on Saturday August 13th. Please join them to work on the gardens and see them in bloom!
If you are splitting flowers or have acess to any of the following they would be very welcome. Daisies, Cone Flowers, or Black-eyed Susans would be welcome in Mrs. Downer's classroom garden plot. Ms. Kuhn is looking for ever-blooming lilac (preferably form Mackinaw Island) and Russian sage for her classroom garden plot. The garden in front of the Art room is in need or Amaranth and sunflowers for Ms. K. Please notify Mrs. King and or the teacher involved if you plan on dropping plants off so they can get into the ground.

THank you to all of the wonderful families who have come and tended gardens this summer if you have not hadyour turn please just stop by. Thank you for all of the plant donations so far they are beautiful and greatly appreciated! And thank you to nthe Brownlee family and all who helped her build our new 5 senses garden! If you would like to be a part and cannot attend, contact Mrs. King tswilson@umich.edu
Spring Garden Days We had one heavy labor work day this spring! We secured RR ties as garden edging, add pea gravel, mulch and compost to gardens. We still need to dig and install the posts and fencing and fill and plant the tire edging. We NEED TRUCKS and /or TRAILERS!!! The biger the better! WE need to transport materials to AALC. Any suggestions are welcome. The Gardens at AALCThe gardens and outdoor areas at AALC are used in so many amazing ways. Teaching using both gardens and other outdoor education activities is a part of our charter. This page will tell you about current and upcoming events as well as future plans and needs for the gardens.
The beautiful educational garden areas seen around the school grounds are a result of the AALC gardening curriculum, which involves all students during the school year. You can help our gardens by donating time, resources, or both. Need is greatest during the summer; community members are encouraged to sign up for both individual work days when a family or group can weed for an hour or so, or the Garden Work Parties, when entire grade levels will tackle larger projects.

Ann Arbor Learning Community asks families to donate their time in ways they are able; we suggest that each family give ½ hour to an hour of their time during the summer. You can signup either at the front desk at school or at www.SignUpGenius.com/go/summer7 When you sign up, you will be asked to choose the day you would like to work. By providing your email address, you will be sent reminders of your commitment over the summer. For more details on garden volunteering, contact Mrs. King at tswilson@umich.edu

Your Garden Volunteering Experience You may come in any time during the day you have committed to work. If you need bathroom access, water fountain access or the water key, please remember that the building will be open between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. The water key is kept in the office, so if you anticipate watering or cleaning, plan the time of your visit accordingly.
Start your garden volunteering day by checking the garden shed, where tools are stored with a list of maintenance and project-related tasks. There will also be a copy of the commitment spreadsheet. Checking posted lists will help you decide which area to work in and keep a record of what has been completed. Remember to cross out or date the things you have accomplished and initial the spreadsheet showing you have done your volunteering.
Simple instructions for watering the garden beds will be posted as well. If you have more time over the summer and just want to drop by and do some gardening, feel VERY free to stop by and help whenever your schedule allows, but if the building is closed, keep in mind that you will not have access to water or bathrooms.
Thank you for your continued support. If you have any questions or suggestions please contact Mrs. King at tswilson@umich.edu
